Canada General Service Medal
The Canada General Service Medal was a campaign medal awarded by the Canadian Government to both Imperial and Canadian forces for duties related to the Fenian raids between 1866 and 1871.The medal was not initially issued until 1899 and had to be applied for. The period for applying for the medal was later extended to 1907, then to 1928.
With late applications, 17,623 medals were awarded[6], including 15,300 to members of Canadian units.
The obverse of the medal bears the head of Queen Victoria with the legend VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX, while the reverse depicts the red ensign of Canada surrounded by a wreath of maple leaves with the word CANADA above.
Clasps
The medal was always awarded with a clasp, with 12 medals awarded with all three clasps. The number of clasps indicated below includes those that appear on multi-clasp medals.
FENIAN RAID 1866
For services related to the Fenian raids of 1866. 13,000 clasps were awarded.
FENIAN RAID 1870
For services related to the Fenian raids of 1870. 5,925 clasps were awarded.
RED RIVER 1870
For services related to the suppression of the Red River Rebellion. 502 clasps were awarded.
La Médaille du service général du Canada est une médaille de campagne décernée par le gouvernement canadien aux forces impériales et canadiennes pour des tâches liées aux incursions des Fenians entre 1866 et 1871. L'avers de la médaille porte la tête de la reine Victoria avec la légende VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX, tandis que le revers représente le drapeau rouge du Canada entouré d'une couronne de feuilles d'érable avec le mot CANADA ci-dessus.
Fermoirs
La médaille a toujours été récompensée par un fermoir, avec 12 médailles attribuées aux trois fermoirs. Le nombre de crochets indiqué ci-dessous comprend ceux qui apparaissent sur les médailles à fermoirs multiples.
