Order of Saint John
The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem
Context
Established in 1888 by Queen Victoria, the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem is a working order of charitably minded men and women whose philanthropy is expressed principally through its two foundations, the St. John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem and St. John Ambulance. The Order traces its origins to the Knights Hospitaller, of the Crusades, who served the Abbey of St. Mary’s small hospital for sick pilgrims in Jerusalem in the 12th century. The Order was brought into the Canadian Honours System in 1990. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is the Order’s Sovereign, His Royal Highness Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, KG, GCVO, is the Grand Prior of the Order and the Governor General is the Prior of the Priory and Chief Officer of the Order in Canada.
This Honour is administered by the Order of St. John.
Eligibility and criteria
Canadians who have performed or are prepared to perform good services for the Order, mainly through its two foundations, the St. John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem and the St. John Ambulance Association and Brigade, may be admitted to the Order. There are five main levels to the Order and usually, one is admitted at the lowest grade and is later promoted through the grades after some standard period of time. The grades are Bailiff or Dame Grand Cross, Knight or Dame of Justice or of Grace, Commander, Officer and Serving Member.

Contexte
Établi en 1888 par la reine Victoria, l’Ordre très vénérable de l’Hôpital de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem est un ordre servant d’hommes et de femmes charitables qui exercent leur œuvre de bienfaisance principalement par l’intermédiaire de ses deux fondations, l’Hôpital ophtalmologique Saint-Jean, à Jérusalem, et l’Ambulance Saint-Jean. Les origines de l’Ordre remontent aux chevaliers des croisades qui se vouaient au service de l’hospice des pèlerins de l’abbaye Sainte-Marie à Jérusalem au XIIe siècle. L’Ordre fait partie du Régime canadien de distinctions honorifiques depuis 1990. Sa Majesté la reine Elisabeth II est le Chef souverain de l'Ordre, Son Altesse royale le prince Richard, duc de Gloucester, KG, GCVO est le Grand Prieur de l'Ordre et le gouverneur général est le Prieur du Prieuré et premier dirigeant de l'Ordre au Canada.
Cette distinction est administrée par l'Ordre de Saint-Jean.
Éligibilité et critères
Les Canadiens qui ont rendu ou qui sont prêts à rendre de bons services à Ordre, principalement à travers ses deux fondations, l'Hôpital d'optométrie de St-Jean à Jérusalem et l'Association et la Brigade de l'Ambulance St-Jean, peuvent être admis à l'Ordre. Il y a cinq grades principaux à l'Ordre et généralement, on est admis au grade le plus bas et on peut être promu aux grades supérieurs par la suite, après une période réglementaire. Les cinq grades sont Bailli ou Dame Grand Croix, Chevalier ou Dame de Justice ou de Grâce, Commandeur, Officier et Membre Servant.
