I SEE O Plenty Fires - (NA)

As the last of the famous Kiowa scout detachment, I-See-O was one of the greatest Indian peacemakers in early Oklahoma history. I-See-O meaning "Plenty Fires" became famous for his work in quieting Indians of several tribes when they went on the warpath in 1890 during a ghost dance craze, in which hundreds of tribesmen and whites were killed. As a reward he was given the permanent rank of sergeant for life by a special act of congress, and was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Although quarters were provided him, he refused to leave his tent and cooked his food over an open fire. In the winter of 1927, he contracted pneumonia and died on March 11. Although his exact age was unknown, many believed him to be 79 years old at the time of his death; he was credited with being the oldest soldier on duty with the United States army.

An Indian funeral service will be held for I-See-O at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Harper's mission [Comanche Reformed Mission], north of Lawton. Reverend Read will conduct the services. 

Following the service, the body will be returned to the St. Clair Undertaking Parlors until Monday afternoon when it will be taken to Fort Sill for military funeral at 2 p.m.

His last expressed wish gratified--to be buried in the full uniform of a soldier of the United States Army--the body of Sergeant I-See-O, peacemaker and last of the Kiowa scout detachment, will be borne to its last resting place Monday afternoon.

Full military honors will be accorded the old scout and close friend for many years of General Hugh L. Scott, retired, renowned for his success in dealing peaceably with the Indians of the plains. General Scott credited much of his success with the Indians in the late eighties and nineties to his friend, I-See-O.

Funeral services for the aged scout, who died Thursday night, following a month's illness with pneumonia, will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Old Post Chapel, Fort Sill, Chaplain Diebert, conducting the services.

The casket of the Indian soldier will be borne on an artillery caisson to the Fort Sill Cemetery where the body will lie among other soldier dead of the Army post. The Fort Sill band will play the funeral dirge, and an escort of fourteen men will be provided.

Many Indians as well as white people are expected to attend the funeral. Tribesmen and their families began arriving Saturday at Fort Sill to attend the funeral rites.

General Scott and General Glennan, retired medical officer of Washington were wired Friday of I-See-O's death. General Glennan was stationed at Fort Sill in the nineties and was a friend of the old scout. (The Lawton Constitution, Sunday, March 13, 1927, p. 1).

Un service funèbre indien aura lieu pour I-See-O à 3 heures dimanche après-midi à la mission Harper [Mission Comanche Reformed], au nord de Lawton. Le révérend Read dirigera les services.
