WHITE Walter raymond - 7255 (NA)

Born 27 October 1880, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph White, Goyeau Street, Windsor, Ontario. He served with the 21st Battalion, Essex Fusiliers. Pte White took an active part in athletic sports, playing baseball, hockey and football. The same day the announcement of Walter White's death appeared in the Evening Record, the following editorial also appeared: 'Windsor Stricken - Windsor has laid its first sacrificial offering on the altar of patriotism. One family is mourning for a son dead, while two other await in dread suspense for further news of the actual condition of sons wounded. A despatch this morning carried to the city the cruel intelligence that a score of Canadian boys had fallen and sixty-one had been wounded in an engagement on Sunday.

Later particulars showed that Windsor had a melancholy interest in the news, saying that among the dead was Walter White, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. White and that Arthur Paddon and Victor E. Marentette were among the wounded. Pte White was killed at Modder River, during the Battle of Paardeburg, South Africa.

The name of Walter White is remembered on the South African War Memorial found in Jackson Park in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Il jouait au base-ball, au hockey et au football. Une de ses familles pleure la mort d'un fils bien-aimé, tandis que deux autres attendent avec inquiétude des nouvelles concernant deux fils blessés. Ce matin, une dépêche nous apprenait qu'un bon nombre de soldats canadiens avaient été tués, tandis que soixante et un autres avaient été blessés lors d'un combat qui a eu lieu dimanche dernier.

On y apprenait notamment que parmi les morts, figurait le nom de Walter White, fils de M. et de Mme Jos. White, et qu'Arthur Paddon et Victor E. Marentette comptait parmi les blessés. » Le soldat White fut tué à la rivière Modder, au cours de la bataille de Paardeburg, Afrique du Sud.

Le nom de Walter White est gravé sur le Monument commémoratif de la guerre d'Afrique du Sud, au parc Jackson, Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
